Ardross Farm Shop - October's Featured Retailer
In 2005, faced with rising fuel costs and increasing pressure from supermarkets, the Pollock family decided that they had to find a new way to make a living from agriculture.
Fortunately for the residents of the beautiful village of Elie, and the surrounding East Neuk area of Fife, Scotland, the family’s answer was to create a farm shop.
Drawing on the skills of a local abattoir and butcher, the Pollocks started to sell their farm-reared meat directly to the public; while the whole family rolled up their collective sleeves to convert a beautiful cart shed into a jewel of a farm shop.
The reaction from local residents was both immediate and very positive. Supplemented by freshly-picked seasonal vegetables, the farm’s meat soon had a loyal local following. And the rest, as they say, is history.
With no retailing experience, the Pollocks were forced to reply on instinct and initiative to develop the farm shop’s product portfolio: plus recommendations from customers.
As a result everything in the shop, including Goupie, has been tried and tested by the family. Happily, the Pollocks proved to have great taste and today the shelves of Ardross Farm Shop are packed with a very broad range of tasty, high quality, foodstuffs with proven provenance: all displayed with flair, passion and pride.
The range on offer has expanded considerably since the early days and now includes free-range eggs, rare breed bacon, world-renowned venison, organic lamb and mutton, free-range chicken, wholesome ready meals, British wines and beers, hand-made chocolates, luxury jams and marmalades, and some very enticing puddings and ice creams.
90% of the produce in the shop is produced by faming families; supplemented by a carefully-chosen selection of artisan products from across the UK.
To help customers plan their visit, the shop’s website – ardrossfarm.co.uk – lists all seasonal fruit and vegetables that are currently available. Deliveries are made each Thursday around East Neuk and to villages east of the A95.
Still very much a family-owned and family-run business, this award-winning retailer is the very model of what a farm shop should be; offering produce fresh from the farm gate that is produced and sold with real commitment to the very best principles of farming.
