If you didn’t already know you can now find Goupie in several National Trust locations across the South East, and we’re about to give you an insight into one of our stockist which seeps a rich abundance in history, Sissinghurst Castle.
If you’ve previously visited the castle and its garden, you may leave being slightly confused to why it’s called a ‘castle’ when there doesn’t appear to be one on the site. Well…formally a pig farm, the tudor buildings were used as a prison to house 3,000 French sailors who were imprisoned during the Seven Years’ War. Held in vile conditions stripped of clean water and access to fresh air, the prisoners referred to Sissinghurst at ‘le chateaux’ loosely translated to ‘castle’.
A few years on, Vita Sackville-West purchased the estate in 1930 as an alternative refuge after their home was threatened by development. Over the next 30 years both she and Harold transformed the farmstead into one of the world’s most famous gardens, the farm now boasts 10 gardens including the Harold and Vita’s favourite, the Nutwalk. After Vita’s death in 1962, the estate was gifted to the National Trust who took over the whole of Sissinghurst, the gardens, farm, buildings and beauty. Today Sissinghurst Castle is among of the National Trust’s most popular properties, and it’s no surprise to see why. The team work tirelessly all year round to ensure all 460 acres of the estate are looked after, the beautiful countryside is a haven for wildlife all year round, a joy for walkers and horse riders alike.
A perfect day out for families looking for an adventure, or couples looking to enjoy some stunning views accompanied by some great food served from seasonally changing menu at the restaurant.
